Peder Simonsen - No. 2 unn004

When Peder Simonsen is not playing techno tuba through old radio machines in Invader Ace, freejazz in ad hoc constellations or pop with Ine Hoem or Klang Kollektif, he will dive into his own experimental music. When doing so, he uses his tuba along with all kinds of electronic gadgets and gets his inspiration from minimalists, experimental music and everything else he might be listening to at the time – both acoustic and electronic.

When he one autumn found that he had nothing to do, he decided to go in the studio and record an album that consists of part improvisation and part composed material, only equipped with his tuba, electronics and whatever he might find lying around the studio. The result became kind of a mix between Jim O'Rourkes subdued electronic works, Oren Ambarchi and Phil Niblocks music. He calls it "slow tuba in major and minor".

An important aspect of the project for Peder was the concepts of time in music, and looping. He spent a lot of time practicing and discovering how he could get a natural relationship to a looping machine, so that he could use it without it sounding like something being looped. He also used a watch a lot in this process, and improvised over long periods, working with very sparse material.

Peder Simonsen (born 1987) has spend the last years in nomadic ways, living in Berlin, Amsterdam and now in Stockholm.

Peder has a master in jazz music from the Music Conservatories in Trondheim, Berlin and Amsterdam. He has been touring in USA and Canada with the widely known band Jaga Jazzist og he has played tuba solo with Angus & Julia Stone in Paris. He has written music for dance shows, and he has played on a wide range of small and big scenes all over the world.
